Excerpt from Artists of the Nineteenth Century and Their Works: A Handbook Containing Two Thousand and Fifty Biographical Sketches It is almost needless to say that in writing of what belongs to the present time it is impossible to avoid more or less inaccuracy. In some cases artists have not done themselves justice in what they have said of their works, while in other instances, doubt less, an undue enthusiasm has tinged the statements made. In printed authorities, too, upon current events, one is not able to insure correctness in the same degree as in writing of things in the past. A large proportion of the critical quotations we have trans lated for this purpose, and an immense number of catalogues of exhibitions and museums have been used in addition to the books named in the list of authorities consulted. In the critiques we have endeavored to give an average opinion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Painting and sculpture flourished in nineteenth-century America and saw the rise of self-taught travelling artists and professional artists producing works for a growing number of wealthy patrons. This innovative introduction examines the profession of the artist alongside the reception of their work by nineteenth-century art audiences. Works of art by familiar names such as Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer are discussed in detail within the larger arena of visual culture, as are key works by recently discovered artists such as Harriet Hosmer. The thematic approach focuses on portraiture, landscape painting, the American West, commemorative art, and goes on to examine the ways in which painters responded to major social and economic changes resulting from the rapid change from an agriculturally-based former colony to an industrialized imperial power with an evolving democracy. Uniquely, Barbara Groseclose treats the embeddedness of American Art in its European heritageas continual and salutary, rather than intermittent and oppositional, and also explores the changing interpretations of art of this period.

The mythical artist, heroic and rebellious, isolated and suffering, is the creation of late-18th-century Romanticism. Throughout the 19th century this powerful myth influenced the way people thought and wrote about artists and, more importantly, the way artists thought about––and depicted––themselves. Covering the period from the French Revolution to World War I, from Romanticism to the avant-garde, this catalogue considers how artists responded to this myth. The focus is on key artists and groups who self-consciously forged distinctive identities: the Nazarenes, Delacroix, Courbet, Manet, Van Gogh, Gauguin, the Nabis, and Schiele. The book includes an introduction, a chronology, and an overview of the myth of the artist in literature, as well as a beautifully illustrated catalogue section arranged according to such themes as Bohemia; Dandy and Flâneur; Priest, Seer, Martyr, Christ; and Creativity and Sexuality.
